Valentine’s day – The dark side

Valentine’s Day. A day to be celebrated indeed.

Yet, what we always fail to see is the other side of this day. The darker one. Where hearts are broken, pain is eminent. A day where everyone wants to put up a show.

This is a poem, I wrote, one Valentine’s day, after hearing a horrible, disheartening so called ‘love-story’.

A broken heart,

Filled with despair.

A mild hint of hope,

Trying to repair.

Filled with guilt and hate,

Comes yet another devastating date.

Lovers everywhere,

Celebrating today like a fair.

Failing to see,

The havoc created in a spree.

Smiles, hugs, kisses and hearts,

Just a few hours left for them to break apart.

False promises,

Disguised with pure roses,

Serving to cover up the true need,

Physical desire with bare greed.

Attempts to show the world,

Fake emotions in sugar coated words.

Fell a girl headlong,

For his so called love song,

Only to be a prey,

To his whims and fancies for one day.

Assuming him to be her knight,

She strode on in the dark night.

Took her a weekend to realize,

That he was the villain in her paradise.

Having given everything away,

She could only wait for his say.

Burnt soul and heart,

She came back, destroyed.

If this is how it goes,

Why have these false vows?

All for one day of the year,

We trust and confide our fears.

Only to be let down,

Removing forever the idea of a happy song.

To all the girls out there, let’s be careful, that we don’t fall prey to just another ‘fake’ love song.
